Suspect Admits To Defacing Newspaper With Hate Symbols In Northern Westchester

Police have found the person who defaced a single copy of The Northern Westchester Examiner newspaper with hate symbols, according to the Examiner News.

Once the person was identified and admitted writing the swastikas and KKK on the paper, the Peekskill Police department said the person could not be charged due to First Amendment rights, the Examiner said.

According to police, if the person had defaced a building or private property, an arrest could have been made.

The defaced copy of the paper was found in the lobby of the Chase bank on Brown Street by a customer who visited the bank, the paper reported.

The bank customer alerted police and the newspaper. The Examiner said the lead story on the paper was regarding the Congressional election of Yorktown High School graduate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Examiner Publisher Adam Stone wrote that he wanted to thank the reader who originally alerted officials about the incident.
